Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984, “Young At Heart” became the signature song of Scottish indie pop band The Bluebells. Written by band members Robert Hodgens and Bobby Bluebell with Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama), the track combines jangling guitars, violin solos, bright harmonies and an uplifting melody to create one of the most enduring pop singles of the decade. Although it achieved only modest chart success on its original release, its reputation continued to grow in the years that followed.

The song’s lyrics celebrate optimism, love and the importance of maintaining a youthful outlook on life regardless of age. Its warm, infectious chorus and timeless message have helped it remain a favourite across generations, while the band’s folk-inspired sound gives it a distinctive charm that sets it apart from many of its 1980s contemporaries.

A decade after its initial release, “Young At Heart” enjoyed an extraordinary second life when it featured in a popular television advertising campaign for Volkswagen. Reissued in 1993, the single climbed to the top of the UK Singles Chart, finally giving The Bluebells the number one hit that had previously eluded them. Today, “Young At Heart” is remembered as a classic slice of Scottish pop, celebrated for its irresistible melody, heartfelt lyrics and remarkable journey from overlooked gem to chart-topping favourite.

The song peaked at No. 08 in the UK Singles Chart on 28th July 1984.

LYRICS

Young at heart
Young at heart

Young at heart
Yet what a start
Old before their time
They married young
For love at last
Was their only crime

How come I love them now ?
How come I love them more ?
Young at heart
You’re so young at heart

Young at heart
Yet not a chance
To be a child at all
They told us tales
They told us lies
Don’t they know
The shouldn’t have told us at all

How come I love them now ?
How come I love them more ?
When all I wanted to do when I was old
Was to walk out the door
Young at heart
You’re so young at heart
Young at heart
You’re so young at heart

How come I love them now ?
How come I love them more ?
How come I love them now ?
How come I love them more ?
How come I love them now ?
How come I love them more ?
When all I wanted to do when I was old
Was to walk out the door

Young at heart
You’re so young at heart
Young at heart
You’re so young at heart
Young at heart
You’re so young at heart
