Story Behind The Song
Released in 1980, “Bear Cage” was the lead single from The Stranglers’ fourth studio album, The Raven. Written by Hugh Cornwell, Jean-Jacques Burnel, Dave Greenfield and Jet Black, the song marked another step in the band’s evolution from their raw punk beginnings towards a more sophisticated blend of new wave, rock and experimental pop. Produced by Alan Winstanley and The Stranglers, it combined driving rhythms, distinctive keyboards and sharp lyrical observations to create one of the group’s most memorable recordings.
The song is a powerful critique of the routine and pressures of working life, using the image of a “bear cage” as a metaphor for the daily grind and the feeling of being trapped in an endless cycle. Hugh Cornwell’s measured vocal delivery reinforces the song’s sense of frustration and resignation, while Dave Greenfield’s swirling keyboard lines, Jean-Jacques Burnel’s melodic bass playing and Jet Black’s disciplined drumming create a tense yet highly melodic backdrop. The combination of catchy hooks and thought-provoking lyrics demonstrated The Stranglers’ ability to produce intelligent, accessible music without losing their distinctive edge.
“Bear Cage” remains one of the standout tracks from The Raven and reflects the band’s willingness to tackle social issues through inventive songwriting. Today, it is regarded as a classic of the post-punk era, admired for its memorable melody, atmospheric production and its insightful commentary on the pressures of modern life.
The song peaked at No. 36 in the UK charts on 29th March 1980.

LYRICS
I work hard, I’m saving my marks
Watch what I do when I swim with the sharks
A new race and a new way to race
Feel ashamed as I live a disgrace
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
They never told me what was the truth
Just a young man losing his youth
Sell cars, sell meat, selling anything
Save up just to live like a king
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
Bear cage
Bear cage
Bear cage
Bear cage
You can keep your Brussels and Amsterdam
Give me back my summer in Dresden, man
But they still got peace police over there
Drawing lines on a map just to show I’m there
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
Gee, (G.) I’m (M.) living (B.H.) in a bear cage
Bear cage
