Story Behind The Song
Released in 1980, “Chinatown” was the title track and lead single from Thin Lizzy’s tenth studio album, Chinatown. Written by Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham and Snowy White, the song introduced guitarist Snowy White following the departure of Gary Moore and demonstrated that the band had lost none of its trademark energy or melodic power. Produced by Kit Woolven, the track combined hard rock with Thin Lizzy’s unmistakable twin-guitar style, delivering a tough, atmospheric sound that reflected the band’s continued evolution.
The song paints a vivid picture of danger, mystery and life on the edge, using the setting of an urban Chinatown as a backdrop for its cinematic storytelling. Phil Lynott’s charismatic vocal performance brings the lyrics to life, balancing grit with his natural storytelling ability. Scott Gorham and Snowy White’s complementary guitar work provides memorable riffs and soaring harmonies, while Brian Downey’s powerful drumming and Lynott’s driving bass create a relentless rhythmic foundation. The result is a tense, energetic recording that captures the band’s ability to combine hard rock with lyrical imagination.
Although often overshadowed by some of Thin Lizzy’s earlier classics, “Chinatown” remains a favourite among fans and an important chapter in the band’s history. It highlighted the successful introduction of Snowy White into the line-up and reaffirmed Thin Lizzy’s reputation for producing intelligent, melodic rock music. Today, the song is recognised as one of the standout tracks from the Chinatown album, admired for its powerful musicianship, memorable guitar work and Phil Lynott’s commanding vocal performance.
The song peaked at No. 21 in the UK charts on 12th July 1980.

LYRICS
Livin’ and dyin’ in Chinatown
Yes, they’re livin’ and dyin’ down in old Chinatown
In Chinatown, you better look around
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Laughin’ and cryin’, you know it’s a fact
They’re not laughin’, they are cryin’, ’cause they won’t be back
Oh, no, you don’t come back, not from Chinatown
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Chinatown, it’s a different scene
There are people there, they are so obscene
If you see what I mean, then they’ve sold you the dream
Down in Chinatown, what goes up, it must come down
Hahahahahahahaha
Livin’ and dyin’, there is no release
Livin’ and dyin’, there is no relief
There is no beliefs, not in Chinatown
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Man, you don’t stand a chance
If you go down in Chinatown
Written By Lynott, Gorham, Downey, White
