Story Behind The Song

U2’s “Desire” marked a striking new direction for the Irish rock band, embracing a rawer, more stripped-back sound influenced by blues, rockabilly and the swagger of classic rock ’n’ roll. Released in 1988, the song demonstrated the group’s willingness to experiment with their established style while retaining the driving energy that had become central to their music.

Written by U2 and produced by Jimmy Iovine, “Desire” is built around an infectious Bo Diddley-inspired guitar rhythm, a punchy bassline and an insistent drumbeat. The distinctive harmonica adds a bluesy edge, while Bono delivers the lyrics with a confident, almost mischievous intensity. The arrangement is lean and direct, creating a sense of urgency that contrasts with the expansive, atmospheric sound associated with some of the band’s earlier recordings.

The song’s lyrics explore desire as a powerful force, touching on temptation, ambition and the pursuit of satisfaction. Bono’s writing draws on the imagery of revivalist preachers and showmanship, suggesting that the hunger for attention and influence can be both exhilarating and unsettling. This mixture of religious symbolism and rock ’n’ roll attitude gives the recording an added layer of meaning.

“Desire” appeared on Rattle And Hum, the album and accompanying film documenting U2’s engagement with American musical traditions. Its energetic performance reflects the band’s growing fascination with blues, gospel and the roots of rock music.

Bold, rhythmic and unmistakably confident, “Desire” remains a distinctive recording in U2’s catalogue, capturing a band exploring new influences without losing its sense of purpose.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 8th October 1988.

SONG LYRICS

Yeah

Lover, I’m off the street
I’m gonna go where the bright lights and the big city meet
With a red guitar, on fire
Desire

She’s the candle burnin’ in my room
I’m like the needle, needle and spoon
Over the counter with a shotgun
Pretty soon, everybody got one

I’ve a fever when I’m beside her
Desire
Desire
(Right)
And the fever gettin’ higher
Desire
Desire

Burning
Burning

She’s the dollars, she’s my protection
Yeah, she’s the promise in the year of elections
Oh, sister, I can’t let you go
Like a preacher stealin’ hearts at a travellin’ show
For love of money, money, money, money, money, money
Money, money, money, money, money

And the fever gettin’ higher
Desire
Desire
Desire
Desire
(Babe)

Desire
Desire
(Alright)
