Story Behind The Song

Released in 1989, “There’s Something Jumpin’ In Your Shirt” was an imaginative collaboration between Lisa Marie, Malcolm McLaren and The Bootzilla Orchestra, appearing on McLaren’s eclectic album Waltz Darling. Produced by Malcolm McLaren, Robbie Kilgore, Mary Kessler, Phil Ramone & Bootsy Collins with a characteristically adventurous approach, the single combined elements of funk, pop, jazz, dance and hip-hop into a vibrant and theatrical recording. It reflected McLaren’s reputation for challenging musical conventions by bringing together unexpected influences with a strong sense of humour and showmanship.

Built around a playful and mischievous lyric, the song uses witty wordplay and tongue-in-cheek storytelling to create an infectious slice of late-1980s pop. Lisa Marie delivers the lead vocal with confidence and personality, perfectly capturing the light-hearted spirit of the recording. Around her, The Bootzilla Orchestra provide a colourful backdrop of punchy brass, lively percussion, funky bass lines and bright keyboard arrangements, creating an energetic groove that keeps the song moving from beginning to end. The polished production balances musical sophistication with a sense of fun, making the track both distinctive and memorable.

Although overshadowed by some of Malcolm McLaren’s better-known recordings, “There’s Something Jumpin’ In Your Shirt” remains an entertaining highlight from the Waltz Darling project. Today, it is appreciated for its inventive production, infectious rhythm and playful charm, standing as an excellent example of McLaren’s willingness to blur the boundaries between pop, funk and performance art while creating music that was both original and accessible.

The song peaked at No. 29 in the UK singles chart on the 2nd September 1989.

LYRICS

Lisa, you’re a beautiful girl
Do you really think so?
True perfection
But can I do it?
Take it to the ball and on that runway
Walk the body
And remember, shoot that arrow!

I know this feeling
Oh it’s hurting, just because love is growing
Oh ah-ha, no don’t stop, please
Oh, it must be love

No matter what I do, no matter what I say
My t-shirt’s changed since yesterday
I look into the mirror and my t-shirt’s got a mark
I guess it’s just because my life is falling apart

But I felt something hurting
And a boy said
“Something’s jumpin’”
Jumping in your shirt
“Jumpin’ in my shirt, something’s jumpin’”
Jumping in my shirt?
“The pain it really hurts”

“Something’s jumpin’”
Jumping in your shirt
“Jumpin’ in my shirt, something’s jumpin”
Jumping in my shirt?
“My heart’s on red alert”

Walk the body!
Walk the body body!
Walk the body!
Walk the bod-bod-body!
Lisa! Lisa!
Walk the body!
Walk the body body!
Walk the body!
Lisa! Lisa!

I know this feeling
Oh it’s hurting, just because love is growing
Oh ah-ha, no don’t stop, please
Oh, It must be love
Something’s jumpin, it must be love
Something’s jumpin! Jumpin in your shirt

Tell me, does it hurt?

The pain it really hurts
Something’s jumpin, it must be love
Something’s jumpin! Jumpin in your shirt
The pain it really hurts
No matter what I do
No matter what I say
The boys see me in a whole new way
It’s different now, they’re all love bound
But I don’t like love
I kick it around, I kick it around, I kick it around

But I felt something hurting
And the boys said
There’s something jumpin!
Jumpin in your shirt
Walk the body! Walk the body!
Lisa! Lisa!

I know this feeling
Oh, it’s hurting, just because love is growing
Oh, ma-ha, no don’t stop, please
Oh, It must be love

I’ve got courage and I feel brave
If those boys try to hurt me
I’ll end their happy day

Jump! Somethings! Jumping in your shirt
Something jumpin! Jumpin in your shirt
Something’s jumpin
It must be love
It must be love
Jump! Jump!
It must be love
Jump!
