Story Behind The Song

Released in 1989, “Don’t Ask Me Why” was the second single from Eurythmics’ seventh studio album, We Too Are One. Written by Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart and produced by Stewart with Jimmy Iovine, the song presented a more restrained and emotionally bruised side of the duo’s sound.

The song centres on the bitter end of a relationship, with Lennox addressing someone who has caused disappointment and emotional damage. Rather than offering an explanation or attempting to repair the relationship, the narrator has reached the point where there is simply nothing left to say. The repeated question in the title becomes almost dismissive, reflecting the finality of her decision.

Annie Lennox delivers the vocal with a mixture of sadness, anger and cool detachment. Her performance gradually intensifies, giving the song an emotional depth that contrasts beautifully with the polished arrangement. David Stewart’s guitar work and the carefully constructed pop production create a rich backdrop without overwhelming Lennox’s voice.

There is a particularly striking contrast between the song’s elegant, melodic surface and its deeply unhappy subject matter. The music feels sophisticated and almost comforting, while the lyrics describe a relationship that has effectively reached its end. That tension gives “Don’t Ask Me Why” much of its appeal.

The song remains one of the more emotionally direct recordings from We Too Are One, capturing Eurythmics at their most mature and reflective while showcasing Lennox’s extraordinary ability to convey heartbreak without resorting to melodrama.

The song peaked at No. 25 in the UK charts on 18th November 1989.

LYRICS

Miracle of miracles
Look what the night dragged in
It’s a pocket full of misery
And trouble on the wind

You spoiled the best years of your life
You took them all in vain
Now you think that you’re forgiven
But you can’t be born again

You say, why?
You say, why?
You say, why?
Don’t ask me, why

I don’t love you anymore
I don’t think I ever did
And if you ever had
Any kind of love for me
You kept it all so well hid

Promises, sweet promises
You kept them from your mind
Like all the lost forgotten things
You never seemed to find

Like all the disappointments
You displayed upon your shelf
Now you’ve got no-one to turn to
You’ve got no-one but yourself

And you say, why?
You say, why?
You say, why?
Don’t ask me, why

I don’t love you anymore
I don’t think I ever did
And if you ever had
Any kind of love for me
You kept it all so well hid

You spoiled the best years of your life
You took them all in vain
Now you think that you’re forgiven
But you can’t be born again

And you say, why?
Why, why, why, why, why
Why, why, why, why, why
Why, why, why, why
And you say, why?
Why, why, why, why, why
Why, why, why, why, why
Why, why, why, why

I don’t love you anymore
I don’t love you anymore
I don’t love you anymore

And you say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
You say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
You say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
Don’t ask me, why
I don’t love you anymore
You say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
You say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
You say, why?
I don’t love you anymore
Don’t ask me, why
I don’t love you anymore
