Story Behind The Song
Released in 1989, “Oh Well” was the self-titled single by the German dance group Oh Well, who gave Peter Green’s classic Fleetwood Mac composition a completely different late-1980s treatment. Rather than attempting to recreate the blues-rock intensity of the original, the group transformed it into a sleek electronic dance track, bringing the song into the world of house and club music.
The original “Oh Well” had been written by Peter Green and recorded by Fleetwood Mac in 1969, with its famous guitar-driven Part 1 becoming one of the band’s most recognisable recordings. Oh Well’s version retains Green’s distinctive songwriting but surrounds it with programmed drums, synthesised sounds and a steady electronic groove.
The contrast between the two versions is particularly striking. Green’s recording is raw, bluesy and driven by expressive electric guitar, whereas the 1989 interpretation is polished, rhythmic and designed for a dancefloor. The electronic production gives the familiar melody an entirely new atmosphere, demonstrating how a classic rock composition could be successfully reimagined through the production techniques of the late 1980s.
Several versions were released, including a radio edit and a UK Big Beat Mix, highlighting the song’s connection with the remix culture of the period.
Oh Well’s “Oh Well” is therefore an intriguing example of musical reinvention, taking a celebrated piece of British blues rock and giving it a distinctly European dance-pop identity.
The song peaked at No. 28 in the UK charts on 28th October 1989.

LYRICS
Can’t help about the shape I’m in
Can’t sing, I ain’t pretty and my legs are thin
Don’t ask me what I think of you
Might not give the answer that you want me to
Now when I talk to God I knew he’d understands
He said stick by me and I’ll be your guidin’ hand
Don’t ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well, well, well, well
Yeah, ooh
Well, we haven’t played anything from Tusk yet
So, we gonna some out tonight for you
And, ah, the first one of which is actually the first track on side one
And it’s callеd Over and Over
