Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” is one of the defining Hi-NRG recordings of the 1980s, combining pounding electronic rhythms, swirling synthesizers and Pete Burns’ unmistakable, commanding vocal performance. Released in 1984 and later included on the album Youthquake, the song was written by Burns, Steve Coy, Wayne Hussey, Tim Lever and Mike Percy, and produced by the emerging team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman.

The song was created after Burns approached Stock Aitken Waterman, wanting the band to explore the Hi-NRG sound associated with artists such as Divine and Hazell Dean. Inspired partly by Luther Vandross’s “I Wanted Your Love”, the recording developed into a highly polished dance track with an almost relentless momentum. The sessions were famously tense, with disagreements between the band and producers, but the finished record delivered the dramatic, larger-than-life sound Burns had wanted.

Lyrically, the song is a direct and flirtatious expression of attraction, with Burns portraying someone completely captivated by another person on the dance floor. Its combination of desire, confidence and theatricality perfectly suited his flamboyant image.
