    The mid-1980s was a turbulent, transformative era for queer culture and electronic music. At the epicentre of this sonic revolution stood Bronski Beat. Following the massive success of their 1984 debut Age of Consent, the band faced a pivotal crossroads when iconic frontman Jimmy Somerville departed. Many critics predicted the end of the band. Instead, founders Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek recruited the phenomenal John Foster (aka “Jon Jon”) and delivered Truthdare Doubledare in 1986.
      
    Now, celebrating its 40th anniversary, this masterpiece of high-energy synth-pop is finally getting its first-ever official reissue treatment courtesy of London Records. Dropping on 3 July 2026, the album has been fully remastered from the original tapes and expanded across digital platforms, a 1xCD, a deluxe 3xCD box set, a picture disc, and a limited-edition purple vinyl LP.

    Released originally in May 1986, Truthdare Doubledare proved that Bronski Beat was a collective force, not just a backing band for a single star. John Foster brought a raw, soulful, and aggressive vocal style that contrasted sharply with Somerville’s ethereal falsetto. The production shifted too. It embraced a heavier, more muscular Euro-disco and Hi-NRG sound. The album is a brilliant mix of club-ready floor-fillers and deeply political commentary, capturing the anxiety and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis.

    This 40th-anniversary release does more than look backward. It completely unearths the band’s archive, pairing original classics with rare BBC Radio One sessions, unreleased studio takes, and fresh club weaponry.
     
    Among the massive vault of content is a brand-new, euphoric club rework of “Hit That Perfect Beat” by modern electronic DJ pioneer I. JORDAN alongside updated touches from Ted Carfrae. It is a sonic monument to resilience, proving that synth-pop can be fiercely political, deeply emotional, and incredibly fun all at the same time.
