Story Behind The Song
Released in 1986, “French Kissin’ In The USA” was the lead single from Debbie Harry’s second solo album, Rockbird. Written by Chuck Lorre, who would later become one of television’s most successful producers, the song gave Harry one of her biggest solo successes outside Blondie. Produced by Seth Justman of The J. Geils Band, it combined polished pop, rock and dance influences while showcasing the charisma and distinctive vocal style that had made Harry an international star.
The song tells the story of an American woman who dreams of finding romance with a touch of European sophistication, playfully contrasting glamour and fantasy with everyday life. Debbie Harry delivers the lyrics with confidence, wit and effortless charm, while the infectious arrangement blends shimmering keyboards, driving guitars, punchy drums and a memorable chorus. The polished production perfectly captures the vibrant pop sound of the mid-1980s, giving the song an upbeat energy that remains instantly appealing.
“French Kissin’ In The USA” demonstrated that Debbie Harry could enjoy success as a solo artist while Blondie remained on hiatus. Although different in style from many of Blondie’s biggest hits, the song highlighted her versatility and ability to adapt to changing musical trends without losing her distinctive identity. Today, it remains one of the standout recordings from her solo career, admired for its catchy melody, stylish production and Harry’s charismatic performance. It continues to be remembered as one of the most enjoyable pop singles of the mid-1980s and a favourite among fans of the era.
The song peaked at No. 08 in the UK charts on 6th December 1986.

LYRICS
Love’s touch comes to mean so much
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Love’s way, s’abandonner
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Slip into the velvet glove, parted lips so filled with love
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Lips upon forbidden places, lingering in long embraces
(Embrasser c’est Français)
Woah-woah-woah
French kissin’ in the USA
French kissin’ in the USA
Hey (French kissin’)
French kissin’ in the USA
French kissin’ in the USA, yeah, yeah
Lips are in motion (Ocean to ocean to ocean)
Oh-woah-woah (Ocean to ocean to ocean)
Paris is calling
(Falling, we’re falling, we’re falling)
(Falling, we’re falling, we’re falling)
Ooh-ooh, oh, oh
Lips close, then blossom like a rose
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Lips wide, holding you inside
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Kisses hard, kisses deep, a kiss to wake us from our sleep
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Take your lover by the hand, speak in tongues and understand
(Embrasser c’est Français, embrasser c’est Français)
Woah, woah-woah
French kissin’ in the USA
French kissin’ in the USA
Hey (French kissin’)
French kissin’ in the USA
French kissin’ in the USA, yeah, yeah
