Story Behind The Song
Released in 1987, “O L’Amour” was a comeback single by Dollar, the British pop duo of David Van Day and Thereza Bazar. Originally written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell of Erasure, the song gave Dollar a fresh connection with the sophisticated synth-pop sound of the late 1980s. Produced by the Stock, Aitken & Waterman team, the recording combined electronic pop with the polished dance production that had become a defining feature of the British charts.
The song captures the excitement and uncertainty of romantic attraction, with its French title and instantly memorable chorus giving it a playful continental flavour. Thereza Bazar’s distinctive vocal style provides much of the song’s character, while David Van Day adds his complementary presence to the arrangement. Bright synthesisers, programmed drums, layered keyboards and a driving dance rhythm create an energetic backdrop, while the polished production gives the track a distinctly late-1980s feel.
“O L’Amour” marked an important return for Dollar after the duo had previously enjoyed major success earlier in the decade. Its release demonstrated that they could successfully adapt their sound to the changing musical landscape while retaining the catchy pop appeal that had made them popular in the first place. Today, the song is remembered as an enjoyable late-1980s comeback, bringing together Dollar’s familiar personalities, Erasure’s songwriting talents and the polished production style of Stock, Aitken & Waterman.
The song peaked at No. 07 in the UK singles chart on the 6th February 1988.

LYRICS
O L’Amour
Broke my heart, now I’m aching for you
Mon amour, what’s a boy in love supposed to do?
Looking for you
You were looking for me
Always reaching for you
You were too blind to see
Oh love of my heart
Why leave me alone?
I’m falling apart
No good on my own
O L’Amour
Broke my heart now, I’m aching for you
Mon amour
What’s a boy in love supposed to do?
Why throw it away
Why walk out on me?
I just live for the day
For the way it should be;
There once was a time
Had you here by my side;
Said I wasn’t your kind
Only here for the ride
O L’Amour
Broke my heart now, I’m aching for you
Mon amour
What’s a boy in love supposed to do?
No emotional ties
Don’t remember my name;
I lay down and die
I’m only to blame;
Oh love of my heart
It’s up to you now;
You tear me apart
I hurt inside out
O L’Amour
Broke my heart now, I’m aching for you
Mon amour
What’s a boy in love supposed to do?
