Story Behind The Song

Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson’s “I Know Him So Well” is one of musical theatre’s most memorable duets, combining emotional storytelling with a beautifully constructed melody. Released in 1984, the song originated in the stage musical Chess, written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, with lyrics by Tim Rice.

The song explores the complicated emotions of two women reflecting on their relationships with the same man. Rather than presenting a straightforward confrontation, it reveals a shared understanding of love, disappointment and the realisation that knowing someone intimately does not necessarily mean understanding everything about them. Its lyrics capture the contradictions of romantic relationships, where affection and familiarity can exist alongside frustration and regret.

Paige and Dickson bring contrasting but complementary vocal styles to the recording. Paige, already an established musical theatre performer, delivers her lines with considerable dramatic intensity, while Dickson’s warmer, more understated voice provides an effective counterbalance. Their performances gradually build towards a powerful emotional climax, allowing the characters’ individual perspectives to emerge while maintaining the intimacy of a conversation.

The recording appeared on the concept album Chess, which explored political rivalry and personal relationships against the backdrop of international competition. The song’s success helped introduce the musical’s sophisticated songwriting to a much wider audience.

“I Know Him So Well” remains a timeless example of musical theatre songwriting at its finest. Its beautiful melody, thoughtful lyrics and exceptional vocal performances give it an emotional depth that continues to resonate with listeners.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 9th February 1985.

SONG LYRICS

Nothing is so good it lasts eternally
Perfect situations must go wrong
But this has never yet prevented me
Wanting far too much for far too long

Looking back I could have played it differently
Won a few more moments, who can tell?
But it took time to understand the man
Now at least I know I know him well

Wasn’t it good? (Oh, so good)
Wasn’t he fine? (Oh, so fine)
Isn’t it madness

He can’t be mine?

But in the end he needs a little bit more than me—
More security

He needs his fantasy and freedom

I know him so well

No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side
And though I move my world to be with him
Still the gap between us is too wide

Looking back I could have (Looking back I)
Played it differently (Could have played things some other way)
Learned about the man before I fell (I was just a little careless)
But I was ever so much younger then (Maybe, I understand the man)
Now at least

I know I know him well

Wasn’t it good? (Oh, so good)
Wasn’t he fine? (Oh, so fine)
Isn’t it madness

He won’t be mine?
Didn’t I know
How it would go?
If I knew from the start
Why am I falling apart?

Wasn’t it good?
Wasn’t he fine?

Isn’t it madness

He won’t be mine?

But in the end he needs a little bit more than me—
More security

He needs his fantasy and freedom

I know him so well

It took time to understand him

I know him so well
