Story Behind The Song

Spitting Image’s “The Chicken Song” was a wonderfully ridiculous piece of television satire that turned the familiar formula of Eurovision-style pop into a gloriously exaggerated comedy performance. Released in 1986, the recording came from the creators of the popular ITV puppet show Spitting Image, which was renowned for its sharp political humour and outrageous celebrity impressions.

Written by Philip Pope, Grant & Naylor and produced by Pope and John Lloyd, the song deliberately poked fun at the predictable ingredients of mainstream pop, particularly the theatrical performances, repetitive choruses and elaborate staging associated with international song contests. Its lyrics revolve around an absurdly simple refrain, accompanied by deliberately exaggerated vocals and an arrangement that imitates the polished, overblown production of conventional novelty pop.

The accompanying television performance featured the programme’s distinctive puppets, adding visual comedy to an already ridiculous musical concept. Its exaggerated choreography and knowingly cheesy presentation were designed to send up the kind of lightweight entertainment that frequently dominated television variety shows.

Beneath the silliness, “The Chicken Song” was a clever piece of musical parody, demonstrating how easily familiar pop conventions could be exaggerated for comic effect. Its deliberately repetitive chorus was particularly effective, becoming one of those musical jokes that audiences found difficult to forget.

Spitting Image had already established itself as a fearless satirical programme, targeting politicians, celebrities and popular culture with equal enthusiasm. “The Chicken Song” extended that approach into the world of music, delivering a memorable slice of comic pop that remains closely associated with British television humour during the 1980s.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 17th May 1986.

SONG LYRICS

It’s the time of year
Now that Spring is in the air
When those two wet gits with their girly curly hair
Make another song for moronic holidays
That nauseate-ate-ate
In a million different ways
From the shores of Spain
To the coast of Southern France
No matter where you hide
You just can’t escape this dance

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
Paint your left knee green
Then extract your wisdom teeth
Form a string quartet
And pretend your name is Keith

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an Eskimo
Eat a Renault Four
Wear salami in your ears
Casserole your gran
Disembowel yourself with spears

The disco is vibrating
The sound is loud and grating
It’s truly nauseating
Let’s do the dance again

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Yes you’ll hear this song in the holiday discos
And there’s no escape in the clubs or in the bars
You would hear this song if you holidayed in Mars

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an Eskimo
Now you’ve heard it once
Your brain will spring a leak
And though you hate this song
You’ll be humming it for weeks

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
La la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la
La la la la la la laaaaaaa
