Story Behind The Song

Released in 1985, “Rock The Night” was one of the earliest major songs by Swedish rock band Europe and later became a key track on their breakthrough album, The Final Countdown. Written by lead vocalist Joey Tempest, the song captured the band’s energetic blend of hard rock, melodic guitar and anthemic songwriting. It was recorded during the sessions for their second album, Wings Of Tomorrow, before being re-recorded for The Final Countdown.

The song is an unabashed celebration of rock music, live performance and the excitement of a night out. Joey Tempest delivers the lyrics with enthusiasm and swagger, while John Norum provides the powerful guitar work that gives the recording its unmistakable hard-rock character. John Levén’s driving bass, Ian Haugland’s energetic drumming and Mic Michaeli’s keyboards complete the arrangement, creating the huge, crowd-pleasing sound that would become central to Europe’s identity.

“Rock The Night” was reissued in 1987 following the worldwide success of “The Final Countdown” and became a significant UK hit. Its memorable guitar riff, soaring chorus and energetic performance helped introduce Europe to a much wider British audience and established the song as one of their signature recordings.

Today, “Rock The Night” remains a classic of 1980s melodic rock, celebrated for its infectious energy, powerful musicianship and irresistible live-anthem quality.

The song peaked at No. 12 in the UK singles chart on the 28th February 1987.

LYRICS

I’ve gone through changes
I’ve gone through pain
But there’s not enough reason
For me to go insane

I know the feeling
Just when it grows
I’m in a rage up from my head
Down to my toes

You know it ain’t easy
Running out of thrills
You know it ain’t easy
When you don’t know what you want
What do you want? Whoa oh ho

You want to rock now, rock the night
Till early in the morning light
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, yea

Rock now, rock the night
You’d better believe it’s right
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, oh oh, oh oh

I know my limit
Just what it takes
When things ain’t good enough
I just pull the brake

Sometimes it’s easy
Sometimes so tough
But just have one thing clear
I can’t get enough

You know it ain’t easy
Running out of thrills
You know it ain’t easy
When you don’t know what you want
What do you want? Whoa oh ho

You want to rock now, rock the night
Till early in the morning light
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, yea

Rock now, rock the night
You’d better believe it’s right
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, yea, yea

Oh, rock now, rock the night
Rock now, rock the night
Rock now, rock the night
Rock now, rock the night, rock it

You know it ain’t easy
Running out of thrills
You know it ain’t easy
When you don’t know what you want
What do you want? Whoa oh ho

You want to rock now, rock the night
Till early in the morning light
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh (Oh, yeah)

Rock now, rock the night
You, you’d better believe it’s right
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, yea, yea
Rock now, rock the night
Till early in the morning light
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh, yeah

Rock now, rock the night
You, you’d better believe it’s right
Rock now, rock the night
Whoa oh, whoa oh
