Feargal Sharkey – A Good Heart

Released in 1985, “A Good Heart” marked an important new chapter for Feargal Sharkey following his years as lead singer of The Undertones. Written by American singer-songwriter Maria McKee and produced by Eurythmics member Dave A. Stewart, the song became the first single from Sharkey’s self-titled debut solo album.

The song is an emotional reflection on love, vulnerability and the fear of being hurt. Its narrator is hopeful about finding lasting love but recognises that relationships can bring disappointment and pain. The central idea of finding “a good heart” gives the song its warmth, while the plea to treat that heart gently adds an unmistakable sense of vulnerability.

Sharkey’s distinctive, slightly tremulous voice is perfectly suited to the material. Having previously been known for the raw energy of The Undertones, his solo performance reveals a much softer and more reflective side. The polished production surrounds his vocal with synthesised keyboards, sequencers, bass, drums, guitar and layered backing vocals, creating a sophisticated mid-1980s pop sound.

Interestingly, McKee wrote the song when she was very young, drawing on her own experiences of love and relationships. Dave A. Stewart heard an early piano-based demo and helped transform it into the polished pop recording that Sharkey ultimately recorded.

“A Good Heart” remains one of Feargal Sharkey’s most memorable solo recordings, combining heartfelt lyrics, an instantly recognisable vocal and an elegant production that captures the emotional uncertainty of searching for lasting love.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 16th November 1985.
