Story Behind The Song

Released in 1989, “Wishing On A Star” was a breakthrough single for British hip-hop group Fresh 4 and became one of the most distinctive UK dance records of the year. The group, formed in Bristol, consisted of Lonsdale Gordon, Ferdinand ‘Gots’ Dervin, Andre Smith and Marvin Nurse. Their version reworked the Rose Royce soul classic into a fresh combination of hip-hop, house and electronic dance music. The song featured vocals by Lizz. E.

The song retains the romantic longing of the original, with the lyrics expressing a heartfelt wish to be reunited with a loved one. Fresh 4’s approach gives the material an entirely different energy, replacing the smooth soul arrangement with programmed beats, samples, scratching and a pulsating house rhythm. The contrast between the familiar melody and the contemporary production helped make the record particularly appealing to listeners experiencing the growing crossover between hip-hop and club music.

“Wishing On A Star” was an important UK chart success for Fresh 4, reaching the Top 10 and helping put Bristol’s emerging music scene firmly on the national map. The group’s use of sampling and dance production reflected the rapidly changing British musical landscape of the late 1980s, when house, hip-hop and soul were increasingly finding common ground.

Today, Fresh 4’s version remains a much-loved example of the UK’s late-1980s dance crossover. Its combination of soulful songwriting, infectious rhythm and inventive production captured a pivotal moment when British hip-hop was beginning to find a wider mainstream audience.

The song peaked at No. 10 in the UK charts on 21st October 1989.

LYRICS

I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means
I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means

And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I wish on all the people who really dream
And I’m wishin’ on tomorrow, praying it’ll come
And I’m wishin’ on all the lovin’ we’ve ever done

I never thought I’d see
A time when you would be
So far away from home
So far away from me
Just think of all the moments that we spent
I just can’t let you go, for me you were meant
And I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I know
That in the game of lovin’, you reap what you sow

I feel it’s time we should make up, baby
I feel it’s time for us to get back together
And make the best of things, oh, baby, when we’re together
Whether or never
I feel it’s time we should make up, baby
I feel it’s time for us to get back together
And make the best of things, oh, baby, when we’re together
Whether or never

I’m wishing on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a dream
To follow what it means

And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I wish on all the people we ever greeted
And I’m hopin’ on all the days to come and days to go
And I’m hopin’ on days of lovin’ you so

I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishing on a star, whoa-oh
And I wish on all the rainbows that I see
I’m wishin’ on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishin’ on a star
