Story Behind The Song
Released in 1982, “Music For Chameleons” marked Gary Numan’s return after announcing his first retirement from touring and became one of the standout singles of his career. Written by Numan and featured on the album I, Assassin, the song demonstrated a significant evolution in his sound, moving beyond the stark electronic style of his earlier recordings by incorporating funk-inspired bass lines and more complex rhythms. Produced by Gary Numan, the track retained his futuristic vision while introducing a fresh musical direction.
The song is built around an instantly recognisable fretless bass performance by Pino Palladino, whose fluid playing gives the track its distinctive character. Combined with layered synthesisers, electronic percussion and atmospheric textures, the arrangement creates a hypnotic groove that was unlike anything else in the charts at the time. Gary Numan’s cool, detached vocal delivery adds to the mysterious atmosphere, while the enigmatic lyrics invite listeners to form their own interpretations rather than offering straightforward answers. The result is a sophisticated and highly original piece that showcased Numan’s willingness to experiment without abandoning his electronic roots.
“Music For Chameleons” remains one of Gary Numan’s most admired recordings and marked the beginning of a more mature and adventurous phase in his career. Its innovative production, memorable bass line and atmospheric sound have ensured its lasting influence on electronic and alternative music. Today, it is regarded as a classic of early 1980s synth-pop and one of the finest examples of Numan’s creative ambition.
It peaked at No. 19 in the UK Singles Chart on 27th March 1982.

LYRICS
At 4 o’clock, we land
And I’ll wave my flag for you
Interest in heart
We are not savage
Like children, we’re people
“What difference?”, I say
Music for
Chameleons
Music for
Chameleons
Woah
Woah
A dream of Siam
We could leave in the morning
Old friends and shy
We need to win
Like you need to breathe
I’ve an interest in games
Music for
Chameleons
Music for
Chameleons
Like I’m calling down rain tonight
Lightning poisoned them
Hey, boys down
Woah
Woah
Gowns for another show
Maybe no one will come
Here, take my arm
I like the pictures
And you like ghost stories
Tomorrow, I’ll sigh
Music for
Chameleons
Music for
Chameleons
Music for
Chameleons
Music for
Chameleons
Woah
Woah, I said I like this
No, never again
