Story Behind The Song

Released in 1982, “Run To The Hills” was one of Iron Maiden’s most powerful and enduring songs, appearing on their landmark third studio album, The Number Of The Beast. Written by bassist and principal songwriter Steve Harris, the track was recorded at Battery Studios with producer Martin Birch and marked a significant moment for the band, being one of the first Iron Maiden recordings to feature Bruce Dickinson on lead vocals.

The song tells the story of the violent conflict between Native American peoples and European settlers, presenting the destruction and suffering caused by colonisation from contrasting perspectives. Harris’s lyrics create a dramatic narrative, while the band’s furious performance gives the subject matter a sense of urgency and intensity.

Bruce Dickinson delivers one of his most commanding vocal performances, moving from rapid verses into the soaring, unforgettable chorus. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith provide the twin-guitar attack that became central to Iron Maiden’s sound, while Harris’s galloping bass and Clive Burr’s powerful drumming drive the song relentlessly forward.

The combination of historical subject matter, intricate musicianship and an instantly recognisable chorus made “Run To The Hills” a defining Iron Maiden recording. It also helped establish the epic, storytelling approach that would become a hallmark of the band’s music throughout the 1980s.

Today, “Run To The Hills” remains one of Iron Maiden’s most recognisable songs and a quintessential heavy-metal anthem, celebrated for its explosive energy, memorable guitar work and powerful storytelling.

The song peaked at No. 07 in the UK Singles Chart on 13th March 1982.

LYRICS

White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need
We fought him hard, we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came, too much for Cree
Oh, will we ever be set free?

Riding through dust clouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom, the stab in the back
Women and children are cowards, attack

Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives

Soldier blue in the barren wastes
Hunting and killing’s their game
Raping the women and wasting the men
The only good Indians are tame
Selling them whiskey and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old

Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives

Yeah
Oh, ow

Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives
