Story Behind The Song
Released in 1984, “Together In Electric Dreams” brought together legendary Italian producer Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey, lead singer of The Human League, for one of the decade’s most enduring electronic pop classics. Written by Moroder and Oakey for the film Electric Dreams, the song perfectly blended Moroder’s pioneering synthesiser-driven production with Oakey’s distinctive, emotive vocals. Although created for a film soundtrack, it quickly developed a life of its own and became one of the defining pop songs of the mid-1980s.
The lyrics celebrate the idea that love can survive despite distance, separation or changing circumstances, with technology serving as a metaphor for maintaining emotional connections. Philip Oakey delivers a heartfelt vocal performance, balancing optimism with longing, while Moroder’s polished arrangement combines shimmering synthesisers, driving electronic rhythms and uplifting melodies. The infectious chorus and soaring instrumental hooks create a warm, euphoric atmosphere that captures both the futuristic spirit and emotional sincerity of the era. Its sophisticated production remains a showcase of Moroder’s influence on modern electronic music.
“Together In Electric Dreams” became one of the most memorable collaborations of the 1980s and has remained a favourite long after the film itself faded from popular memory. Its timeless melody and optimistic message have ensured its continued popularity, making it a regular feature on 1980s radio stations, compilation albums and live performances by Philip Oakey. Today, the song is widely regarded as an electronic pop classic, celebrated for its unforgettable chorus, innovative production and emotional warmth, standing as a perfect example of the creative partnership between two pioneers of synth-driven music.
The song peaked at No. 03 in the UK charts on 27th October 1984.

LYRICS
I only knew you for a while
I never saw your smile
Till it was time to go
Time to go away
(Time to go away)
Sometimes it’s hard to recognise
Love comes as a surprise
And it’s too late
It’s just too late to stay
Too late to stay
We’ll always be together
However far it seems
(Love never ends)
We’ll always be together
Together in electric dreams
Because the friendship that you gave
Has taught me to be brave
No matter where I go
I’ll never find a better prize
(Find a better prize)
Though you’re miles and miles away
I see you every day
I don’t have to try
I just close my eyes I close my eyes
I close my eyes
We’ll always be together
However far it seems
(Love never ends)
We’ll always be together
Together in electric dreams
We’ll always be together
However far it seems
(Love never ends)
We’ll always be together
Together in electric dreams
We’ll always be together
However far it seems
(Love never ends)
We’ll always be together
Together in electric dreams
We’ll always be together
However far it seems
(Love never ends)
We’ll always be together
Together in electric dreams…
