Story Behind The Song

Goombay Dance Band’s “Seven Tears” is a distinctive blend of European pop and Caribbean-inspired rhythms, combining a gentle, swaying melody with a bittersweet story of longing and separation. Released in 1982, the song showcased the group’s ability to create accessible, melodic pop with an exotic musical flavour that set them apart from many of their contemporaries.

The group was founded by German musician Oliver Bendt, who drew inspiration from the sounds and rhythms of the Caribbean. This influence is evident throughout “Seven Tears”, where tropical percussion, smooth harmonies and a relaxed instrumental arrangement provide the backdrop for its emotional narrative. The production balances a sunny, almost celebratory musical atmosphere with lyrics that explore sadness, lost love and the pain of being apart from someone important.

The title suggests tears shed over a relationship or an emotional farewell, giving the song a sense of melancholy beneath its inviting rhythm. This contrast between upbeat instrumentation and wistful sentiment became a recognisable feature of the group’s sound, allowing their music to feel both uplifting and reflective.

Goombay Dance Band took its name from Goombay, a traditional Bahamian musical style, and their recordings frequently incorporated Caribbean influences into carefully crafted European pop arrangements. “Seven Tears” remains one of their best-known recordings, capturing the early-1980s fascination with tropical sounds and melodic escapism.

With its memorable chorus, gentle groove and evocative atmosphere, the song offers a nostalgic reminder of a period when pop music often transported listeners to an imagined world of sunshine, romance and faraway shores.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 27th March 1982.

SONG LYRICS

Seven tears have flown into the river
Seven tears are runnin’ to the sea
If one day they reach some distant waters

Then you’ll know
It’s sent with love from me
Here I stand
Head in hand
Lonely like a stranger on the shore
I can’t stand this feeling anymore
Day by day
This world’s all grey
And if dreams were eagles I would fly

But they ain’t
And that’s the reason why
Seven tears have flown into the river

Oh
My darling
Oh
My pretty lady

Golden star that leads to paradise
Like a river’s running to the ocean
I’ll come back to you fourthousand miles
Here I stand
Head in hand
Seven tears have flown into the river

Oh
My darling
Oh
My pretty lady
Seven tears have flown into the river

Oh
My darling
Oh
My pretty lady
