Story Behind The Song

Kajagoogoo’s “Too Shy” is one of the defining recordings of early-1980s British pop, combining an instantly recognisable bassline with shimmering synthesizers, crisp percussion and an infectious chorus. Released in 1983, the song introduced the band’s distinctive sound to a wide audience, capturing the stylish, colourful spirit of the New Romantic era.

Written by the band members alongside producer Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, “Too Shy” showcases the group’s ability to balance sophisticated electronic textures with an accessible pop melody. Its opening bassline, played by Nick Beggs, provides the track’s rhythmic foundation, weaving around the synthesizers to create a sound that is both playful and irresistibly danceable. Limahl’s distinctive lead vocal adds a slightly mysterious quality, perfectly suited to the song’s theme of romantic hesitation.

The lyrics explore the frustration of trying to connect with someone who is reluctant to reveal their feelings. There is a sense of flirtation and uncertainty throughout, with the narrator encouraging a shy admirer to overcome their inhibitions. This simple but relatable subject is delivered with a lightness that complements the track’s polished production.

Kajagoogoo emerged during a period when British pop was embracing bold fashion, electronic instrumentation and carefully constructed visual identities. “Too Shy” captured these elements while establishing a musical identity of its own, particularly through its prominent bass playing and memorable arrangement.

Decades later, the song remains an unmistakable snapshot of the era: stylish, melodic and full of youthful energy, with a groove that continues to make it instantly recognisable.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 19th February 1983.

SONG LYRICS

Tongue tied or short of breath
Don’t even try
Try a little harder
Something’s wrong
You’re not naive, you must be strong
Ooh, baby try

Hey girl, move a little closer

You’re too shy shy, hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy, hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush

Modern medicine falls short of your complaint
Ooh, try a little harder
Moving in circles won’t you dilate
Ooh, baby try

Hey girl, move a little closer

‘Cause you’re too shy shy, hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush

You’re too shy shy, hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy, hush hush eye to eye
Too, shy shy, hush hush
