The Beloved – The Sun Rising

Released in 1989, “The Sun Rising” was one of The Beloved’s most atmospheric and influential recordings, blending ambient house with the emerging sounds of the late-1980s British rave scene. Written by Jon Marsh and Steve Waddington and produced by Martyn Phillips, the track became a defining moment in the group’s transition from their earlier post-punk-influenced sound towards electronic dance music.

The inspiration came from Marsh returning home after a night at Danny Rampling’s Joy club and watching the sun rise. That experience became the emotional foundation of the song, capturing the peaceful, euphoric feeling of dawn after a night spent dancing. The lyrics are deliberately abstract, while the music creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere through gentle rhythms, reversed guitar textures and an ethereal soprano sample from Hildegard Of Bingen’s “O Euchari”.

Rather than relying on a conventional pop structure, “The Sun Rising” gradually unfolds around its hypnotic rhythm and haunting vocal sample. The result is spacious, warm and deeply atmospheric, perfectly capturing the optimism and escapism associated with the UK’s emerging rave culture.

The song later appeared on The Beloved’s 1990 album Happiness, an influential collection that fused house, synth-pop and dance music. Today, “The Sun Rising” is regarded as a classic of ambient and chill-out dance music, remembered for its beautiful sense of space, uplifting atmosphere and ability to capture the magical moment when a long night finally gives way to morning.

The song peaked at No. 26 in the UK Singles Chart on 4th November 1989.
