Story Behind The Song

Jason Donovan’s “Too Many Broken Hearts” captured the bright, polished sound of late-1980s pop, combining an infectious melody with the unmistakable production style of Stock Aitken Waterman. Released in 1989, the song helped establish Donovan as a successful recording artist beyond his television role as Scott Robinson in the Australian soap opera Neighbours.

Written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, the track follows the familiar formula that had become synonymous with the trio’s work. Bright synthesizers, a driving electronic rhythm and carefully layered backing vocals provide the foundation, while Donovan’s youthful, clear delivery gives the song an appealing sense of urgency. The chorus is particularly memorable, built around a simple hook that captures the emotional frustration at the heart of the lyrics.

The song explores the disappointment of repeated romantic failures, with the narrator questioning whether another relationship is worth the risk of further heartbreak. Beneath its cheerful musical arrangement lies a familiar theme of uncertainty, vulnerability and the search for lasting affection. This contrast between upbeat production and emotional subject matter was a characteristic feature of much late-eighties pop.

Donovan’s natural charm and growing confidence as a performer helped make the recording particularly appealing, while the polished production gave it the distinctive sound associated with the PWL era. His collaboration with Stock Aitken Waterman would become an important part of his early musical career.

“Too Many Broken Hearts” remains a quintessential late-eighties pop recording, full of energy, memorable melodies and the infectious optimism that made the era’s Stock Aitken Waterman productions so recognisable.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 11th March 1989.

SONG LYRICS

Last night you talked about leaving
I said I can’t let you go
It’s not just emotional feeling
I need your body and soul

You give me one good reason to leave me
I’ll give you ten good reasons to stay
You’re the only one I believe in
I’d be hurt, I’d be hurt, if you walked away

Too many broken hearts in the world
There’s too many dreams can be broken in two
Too many broken hearts in the world
So I won’t give up the fight for you

The world is full of lonely people
Who never held onto love
Last night I tried to reach you
But somehow it wasn’t enough

So I said, can’t you wait a bit longer?
I’ll give you all that a lover should give
It ain’t my pride but my love that is stronger
I’d be hurt, I’d be hurt, if you walked away

Too many broken hearts in the world
There’s too many dreams can be broken in two
Too many broken hearts in the world
So I won’t give up the fight for you
Too many broken hearts in the world
There’s too many dreams can be broken in two
Too many broken hearts in the world
So I won’t give up the fight for you

You give me one good reason to leave me
I’ll give you ten good reasons to stay
You’re the only one I believe in
I’d be hurt, I’d be hurt, if you walked away

Too many broken hearts in the world
There’s too many dreams can be broken in two
Too many broken hearts in the world
So I won’t give up the fight for you
Too many broken hearts in the world
There’s too many dreams can be broken in two
Too many broken hearts in the world
So I won’t give up the fight for you
