Story Behind The Song
The Timelords’ “Doctorin’ The Tardis” was one of the most unusual and entertaining pop recordings of the late 1980s, combining elements of dance music, rock ’n’ roll and television nostalgia into an unmistakably eccentric production. Released in 1988, the track was the work of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, better known as The KLF, who adopted the Timelords name for the project.
Built around the familiar theme from the BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who, the recording incorporates references to Gary Glitter’s “Rock And Roll (Part Two)” and other recognisable musical elements. Its driving beat, repetitive chants and energetic production create a deliberately over-the-top party atmosphere, while the repeated references to the TARDIS give the track its unmistakable identity.
The song was conceived as part of Drummond and Cauty’s interest in sampling, remixing and transforming existing recordings into something new. Their approach was playful and deliberately provocative, challenging conventional ideas about songwriting and originality. The result was a curious mixture of nostalgia and contemporary dance music that was difficult to categorise.
The accompanying video embraced the song’s eccentric character, featuring a Ford Galaxie police car decorated with Doctor Who references and imagery associated with the production.
“Doctorin’ The Tardis” remains a memorable example of late-eighties novelty dance music, demonstrating the creative possibilities of sampling and musical reinvention. Its combination of television nostalgia, familiar musical hooks and irreverent humour gives it a character unlike almost anything else from the decade.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 16th June 1988.
