Story Behind The Song

Jennifer Rush’s “The Power Of Love” is a sweeping pop ballad that captures the overwhelming intensity of falling deeply in love. Released in 1984 and again in 1985, the song combines an intimate emotional message with a dramatic arrangement, showcasing Rush’s powerful voice and establishing the recording as one of the decade’s most memorable romantic anthems.

Written by Rush alongside Candy DeRouge, Gunther Mende and Mary Susan Applegate, the song builds gradually from a restrained opening into a powerful vocal performance supported by synthesizers, drums and rich backing vocals. Rush begins with a sense of vulnerability before allowing her voice to soar as the arrangement gathers momentum. The contrast between the quieter passages and the soaring chorus gives the recording its distinctive emotional impact.

The lyrics portray love as an all-consuming force capable of providing security, courage and a sense of belonging. Rather than presenting romance as effortless, the song conveys the feeling of being completely exposed to another person while finding strength in that connection. Rush’s passionate delivery makes these sentiments feel personal and immediate, giving the song an emotional depth that extends beyond its grand production.

Born in Queens, New York, Rush developed an international career that brought together American vocal power and European pop sensibilities. “The Power Of Love” became her signature recording, inspiring numerous later interpretations, including a celebrated version by Céline Dion.

With its memorable melody, dramatic climax and heartfelt performance, Rush’s original remains a defining example of the grand, emotionally charged ballads that characterised 1980s pop.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 12th October 1985.

SONG LYRICS

The whispers in the morning
Of lovers sleeping tight
Are rolling by like thunder now
As I look into your eyes
I hold on to your body
And feel each move you make
Your voice is warm and tender, a love
That I could not forsake

‘Cause I’m your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I’ll do all that I can

Lost is how I’m feeling
Lying in your arms
When the world outside’s too much to take
That all ends when I’m with you
Even though there may be times
It seems I’m far away
But never wonder where I am
‘Cause I am always by your side

‘Cause I’m your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I’ll do all that I can

We’re heading for something
Somewhere I’ve never been
Sometimes I am frightened, but I’m ready to learn
‘Bout the power of love

The sound of your heart beating
Made it clear suddenly
The feeling that I can’t go on
Is light years away

‘Cause I’m your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I’ll do all that I can

We’re heading for something
Somewhere I’ve never been
Sometimes I am frightened, but I’m ready to learn
‘Bout the power of love
We’re heading for something
Somewhere I’ve never been
Sometimes I am frightened, but I’m ready to learn
‘Bout the power of love

Ooh, the power of love
The power of love
Sometimes I am frightened, but I’m ready to learn
‘Bout the power of love
