Story Behind The Song
Madonna’s “Who’s That Girl” captures the bright, infectious sound of late-1980s pop, combining Latin-inspired rhythms with the confident vocal style that had become her trademark. Released in 1987, the song was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard for the film of the same name, in which Madonna played a quick-witted young woman caught up in a comic adventure.
The recording blends lively percussion, synthesizers and a buoyant bassline, creating an arrangement that feels both playful and sophisticated. Madonna’s vocals shift between flirtatious restraint and energetic delivery, while the repeated title provides an instantly memorable hook. Elements of Latin music, including the rhythmic emphasis and colourful instrumental touches, give the track a distinctive character within her catalogue.
The song’s lyrics revolve around mystery, attraction and the difficulty of truly knowing another person. This sense of intrigue reflects the film’s central character, whose charm and unpredictable behaviour keep those around her guessing. Rather than relying on a dramatic or introspective approach, Madonna delivers the material with lightness and confidence, allowing the rhythm and melody to carry much of the song’s appeal.
“Who’s That Girl” arrived during a particularly productive period in Madonna’s career, when she was expanding her influence beyond music into film and fashion. Its polished production and infectious energy remain characteristic of the decade’s mainstream pop sound, while its Latin flavour distinguishes it from many contemporary dance recordings. The result is an engaging snapshot of Madonna’s creative world in 1987.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 25th July 1987.

SONG LYRICS
Who’s that girl?
Who’s that girl?
When you see her
Say a prayer and kiss your heart goodbye
She’s trouble
In a word, get closer to the fire (Run to the fire)
Run faster
Her laughter burns you up inside
You’re spinning ’round and ’round
You can’t get up, you try, but you can’t
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl?
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl?
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
You try to avoid her
Fate is in your hands
She’s smiling
An invitation to the dance
Her heart is on the street
Tu corazón es suyo
Now you’re falling at her feet
You try to get away, but you can’t
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl?
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
Light up my life
So blind, I can’t see
Light up my life
No one can help me now
Run faster
Her laughter burns you up inside
You’re spinning ’round and ’round
You can’t get up, you try, but you can’t
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl?
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl?
Light up my life
So blind, I can’t see
Light up my life
No one can help me now
Who’s that girl?
Now, who’s that girl?
Now, who’s that girl?
Now, who’s that girl?
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl? (Who’s that girl? Tell me, have you ever seen her?)
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl? (Who’s that girl? Who’s that girl?)
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl? (Who’s that girl? Tell me, have you seen her?)
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl? (Who’s that girl? Who’s that girl?)
¿Quién es esa niña?
Who’s that girl? (La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la)
Señorita más fina
Who’s that girl? (Who’s that girl? Tell me, have you seen her?)
¿Quién es esa niña?
