Story Behind The Song

Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers’ “Swing The Mood” was a joyful celebration of rock ’n’ roll nostalgia, bringing together familiar melodies from the 1940s and 1950s in an energetic dance-floor medley. Released in 1989, the recording introduced a new generation of listeners to classic swing and early rock ’n’ roll, using modern production techniques to give vintage recordings a fresh, party-ready appeal.

Created by British DJ and producer John Pickles, working with the Mastermixers, the track combines snippets of well-known songs with a driving beat and carefully timed transitions. Familiar musical phrases appear in quick succession, creating a continuous flow that encourages listeners to recognise each tune while enjoying the overall rhythm. The result is less a conventional song than a cleverly assembled musical journey through several decades of popular entertainment.

The medley draws on the big-band swing of the 1940s and the exuberant rock ’n’ roll of the following decade, reflecting a renewed interest in retro music and dance culture during the late 1980s. Its playful approach makes the past feel immediate and accessible, while the seamless mixing gives the recording a distinctly contemporary character.

Jive Bunny became known for this combination of nostalgic source material and modern dance production, appealing to audiences who enjoyed both familiar classics and upbeat party music. “Swing The Mood” established the project’s signature formula, demonstrating how older recordings could be reimagined for a new audience.

With its infectious rhythm, recognisable melodies and celebratory spirit, “Swing The Mood” remains a lively snapshot of late-eighties nostalgia, proving that great tunes can cross generations and keep dance floors moving.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 5th August 1989.
