Story Behind The Song

Wet Wet Wet’s version of “With A Little Help from My Friends” brought a fresh, soulful energy to one of the most celebrated songs in the Beatles’ catalogue. Released in 1988, the recording was made in support of BBC ChildLine, the telephone counselling service established to help children and young people facing difficulties. The charity connection gave the song’s message of friendship and support an especially meaningful context.

Originally written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for Ringo Starr to sing on the Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the song celebrates friendship, loyalty and the reassurance that comes from having people who stand by you. Its conversational lyrics ask whether life’s challenges can be faced more easily with the support of others, delivering a message that remains universally appealing.

Wet Wet Wet approached the composition with a strong emphasis on rhythm, warmth and vocal expression. Marti Pellow’s distinctive lead performance gives the song a more contemporary soul character, supported by the band’s lively instrumentation and carefully arranged backing vocals. Rather than simply reproducing the original, the group brings its own personality to the material, balancing respect for the Beatles’ songwriting with an energetic interpretation suited to the late-eighties sound.

The recording also reflected the band’s growing confidence as interpreters of established songs, demonstrating their ability to connect with audiences through familiar material while retaining their own musical identity.

At its heart, “With A Little Help From My Friends” is a celebration of companionship and shared strength. Wet Wet Wet’s spirited rendition preserves that timeless sentiment, delivering an uplifting performance that underlines the enduring power of friendship and the music that brings people together. It was released as a AA single with the Billy Bragg/Cava Tivey, Beatles cover track “She’s Leaving Home”.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 21st May 1988.

SONG LYRICS

What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key

Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get high with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends

My friends

What do you do when our love is away
Does it worry you to be alone
How does it feel by the end of the day
Are you sad because you’re on your own

Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get high with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody? I need somebody to love
Could it be anybody? I need somebody to love (to love to love)

Would you believe in it’s love at first sight
Yes I’m certain that it happens all the time
What do you see when you turn out the lights
I can’t tell you but I know that it’s mine

Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get high with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody? I need somebody to love
Could it be anybody? I need somebody to love

Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get high with a little help from my friends
Oooh I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
With a little help from my friends

My friends, my friends, my friends, my friends, my friends
My friends, my friends, my friends, my friends, my friends
My friends, my friends

Written By John Lennon, Paul McCartney
