Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984, “Material Girl” was the opening track from Madonna’s second studio album, Like A Virgin. Written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans and produced by Nile Rodgers, the song combined bright synth-pop with disco and new wave influences, creating one of the most instantly recognisable sounds of Madonna’s early career. The song presents a deliberately exaggerated character who insists that romance is only worthwhile when accompanied by financial security. Its playful references to money, luxury and material possessions helped create Madonna’s famous “Material Girl” persona, although the song is far more tongue-in-cheek than its reputation might suggest. Madonna herself regarded the lyrics as ironic and provocative rather than a straightforward statement of her own personality.

Musically, Nile Rodgers gave the recording a crisp, highly polished arrangement built around synthesiser riffs, electronic rhythm programming and a strong bass presence from Chic’s Bernard Edwards. Tony Thompson supplied the drums, while Rodgers played guitar and synthesiser. Madonna’s bright, deliberately playful vocal delivery gives the song much of its character, particularly during the instantly memorable chorus.

The accompanying video became just as important to the song’s identity. Directed by Mary Lambert, it recreated the glamorous “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” sequence from the Marilyn Monroe film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, placing Madonna in an extravagant Hollywood setting while subtly undercutting the materialistic image.

“Material Girl” remains a defining example of Madonna’s ability to combine catchy pop, visual spectacle and playful irony into a cultural statement that continues to be instantly recognisable.

The song peaked at No. 03 in the UK singles chart on the 16th March 1985.

LYRICS

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they’re okay
If they don’t give me proper credit
I just walk away
They can beg and they can plead
But they can’t see the light (That’s right)
‘Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right

‘Cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That’s all right with me
If they can’t raise my interest
Then I have to let them be
Some boys try and some boys lie
But I don’t let them play (No way)
Only boys that save their pennies
Make my rainy day

‘Cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Living in a material world (Material)
Living in a material world
Living in a material world (Material)
Living in a material world

Boys may come and boys may go
And that’s all right, you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they’re after me

‘Cause everybody’s living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

A material, a material, a material, a material world
Living in a material world (Material)
