Story Behind The Song

Released in 1983, “Rip It Up” became the defining song of Scottish indie pop band Orange Juice and marked their commercial breakthrough. Taken from the album of the same name, the single perfectly captured the group’s unique blend of jangly guitar pop, post-punk attitude and irresistible funk influences. Fronted by Edwyn Collins, Orange Juice had built a loyal following on the independent music scene before introducing their distinctive sound to a much wider audience.

Written by Collins, the song is driven by a memorable bass line, sparkling guitar work and an infectious dance groove inspired by American funk and disco. Its playful lyrics celebrate moving on from the past and embracing new opportunities, reflecting a confident optimism that matched the band’s fresh musical direction. Collins’ relaxed vocal style and witty delivery gave the track an effortless charm, while the polished production helped bridge the gap between indie credibility and mainstream appeal.

The success of “Rip It Up” established Orange Juice as one of the most influential British bands of the early 1980s. Although they enjoyed further success with later releases, this remains the recording most closely associated with the group and is widely regarded as a landmark of the post-punk era. Today, “Rip It Up” continues to inspire generations of indie musicians, celebrated for its inventive fusion of guitar pop and dance rhythms, its timeless melody and Edwyn Collins’ distinctive songwriting style.

The song peaked at No. 08 in the UK charts on 2nd April 1983.

LYRICS

When I first saw you, something stirred within me
You were standing sultry in the rain
If I could’ve held you, I would’ve held you
Rip it up, and start again

Rip it up, and start again
Rip it up, and start again
I hope to God you’re not as dumb as you make out
I hope to God, I hope to God
And I hope to God I’m not as numb as you make out
I hope to God, I hope to God

And when I next saw you, my heart reached out for you
My arms stuck like glue to my sides
If I could’ve held you, I would’ve held you
Joke rather than swallow my pride

Rip it up, and start again
Rip it up, and start again
I hope to God you’re not as dumb as you make out
I hope to God, I hope to God
And I hope to God I’m not as numb as you make out
I hope to God, I hope to God

And there were times I’d take my pen, and feel obliged to start again
I do profess, that there are things in life that one can’t quite express
You know me, I’m acting dumb-dumb
You know this scene is very humdrum
And my favorite song’s entitled “Boredom”

Rip it up and start again
I said rip it up and start again
I said rip it up and rip it up and rip it up and rip it up
Rip it up and start again

Rip it up
Rip it up
Rip it up
Rip it up and start again
Rip it up
Rip it up
Rip it up
Rip it up
