Released in 1987, “If I Was Your Girlfriend” was one of the most distinctive tracks from Prince’s acclaimed double album Sign O’ the Times. Written, arranged and produced by Prince, the song demonstrated his willingness to explore intimacy, gender identity and emotional vulnerability in ways that were unusual for mainstream pop.
