Story Behind The Song

Released in 1981, “Ai No Corrida” was one of the standout singles from Quincy Jones’ acclaimed album The Dude. Written by Kenny Young and Chas Jankel, formerly of Ian Dury & The Blockheads, the song was originally recorded by Jankel the previous year before Quincy Jones transformed it into a slick, danceable fusion of funk, jazz, soul and pop. Produced by Jones, the recording featured an all-star group of session musicians and the outstanding lead vocals of Charles May, creating one of the defining jazz-funk hits of the early 1980s.

The song’s title translates from Japanese as “Corrida of Love”, although the lyrics are less concerned with a literal story than with the excitement, passion and unpredictability of romance. A driving bass line, crisp rhythm guitar, shimmering keyboards and vibrant horn arrangements combine to create an irresistible groove, while Charles May’s soulful vocal performance brings warmth and energy to the sophisticated production. Jones’ impeccable attention to detail ensures every musical element sits perfectly within the mix, resulting in a polished recording that remains fresh decades later.

“Ai No Corrida” became one of Quincy Jones’ biggest international hits and highlighted his remarkable talent as a producer and arranger capable of bringing together musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds. Today, the song is regarded as a classic of the jazz-funk era, celebrated for its infectious rhythm, flawless production and timeless blend of musical styles that continues to inspire listeners around the world.

The song peaked at No. 14 in the UK singles chart on the 23rd May 1981.

LYRICS

I hold you, I touch you
In a maze, can’t find my way
I think you, I drink you
I’m being served you on a tray
You see, girl
That’s what I go through every day
Is this the way it should feel?

Pinch me, I’m dreaming
But if it is don’t let me know
I’m drowning, don’t save me
It’s just the way I’d like to go
You see, girl
You thrill me, half kill me
That’s what you do…

Ai no corrida, that’s where I am
You send me there
Your dream is my command
Ai no corrida, I find myself
No other thought
Just you and nothing else
You and nothing else

Before my heart saw you
Each day was just another day
Night, the lonely interlude
Just came, then blew away
You know, girl
Everything was come what may
Until you fell in my life

This spell I’m under
Has caught me, I’m in a daze
Your lightning and thunder
Sets my poor heart ablaze
You see, girl
You thrill me, half kill me
That’s what you do

Ai no corrida, that’s where I am
You send me there
Your dream is my command
Ai no corrida, I find myself
No other thought
Just you and nothing else
You and nothing else
Ai no corrida, that’s where I am
You send me there
Your dream is my command
Ai no corrida, I find myself
