Story Behind The Song
Released in 1987, “Tomorrow (Remix)” was a reworked version of The Communards’ song from their second studio album, Red. Written by Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles and produced by Stephen Hague, the track demonstrated the duo’s ability to combine emotional songwriting with sophisticated electronic pop. The remix was handled by Steve Lipson, with additional keyboards from Rob Fisher and an elaborate string arrangement by Richard Coles.
The song carries a strong sense of determination and emotional resilience. Somerville sings from the perspective of someone who has endured a damaging relationship but has finally found the strength to walk away. The repeated promise of leaving “tomorrow” gives the song a feeling of anticipation, while the lyrics contrast vulnerability with an increasingly defiant attitude.
Musically, the remix gives the original composition a fuller, more dramatic sound. Electronic programming and keyboards provide the rhythmic foundation, while cello, viola and multiple violins add a sweeping orchestral quality. Jimmy Somerville’s distinctive high tenor remains at the centre of the recording, delivering the emotional intensity that became such an important part of The Communards’ sound.
“Tomorrow (Remix)” is a fine example of the duo’s late-1980s style, bringing together synth-pop, soul and orchestral elements without losing the directness of the songwriting. Its mixture of melancholy, strength and hope gives the track a particularly emotional character, while the polished remix adds an expansive quality to an already powerful song.
The song peaked at No. 23 in the UK charts on 26th September 1987.

LYRICS
Like the knife of a thief that’s held close to the throat
I’m threatened by you and that cruel way you gloat
You once turned me on, now it all seems so remote
You broke me in pieces, you cherished each blow
The harder you hit me, the stronger I grow
I’ll leave you tomorrow, take my pride and I’ll go
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
I’m leaving tomorrow
I’m leaving tomorrow
I’m leaving
I’ve had all I can take
Don’t tell me you love me, your tears are too late
Your trap was deception, and I took the bait
The animal in you, you can’t keep at bay
I’m not your possession to treat as you wish
Your silence will slowly destroy you each day
I’m leaving tomorrow, my love for life is great
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
I’m leaving tomorrow
I’m leaving tomorrow
I’m leaving
Yes, I’m leaving
I’ve had all I can take
You broke me in pieces, you cherished each blow
The harder you hit me, the stronger I grow
I’ll leave you tomorrow, take my pride and I’ll go
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take
I’m leaving tomorrow
I’m leaving tomorrow
(You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take)
I’m leaving tomorrow
(You may break the skin but you can’t kill the soul
I’ve had all I can take)
I’m leaving tomorrow…
