The Housemartins – Build

Released in 1987, “Build” was one of the most distinctive songs from The Housemartins’ second and final studio album, The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death. Written by Paul Heaton and Stan Cullimore and produced by John Williams, the song showed a softer, more reflective side of the Hull band while retaining their sharp social awareness.

Despite its gentle melody and almost innocent-sounding chorus, “Build” is not a straightforward celebration of construction. The song was inspired by slum clearances in the north of England and reflects the disruption caused when established communities are demolished and replaced by new developments. Its lyrics contrast the excitement of building with the sense of loss experienced by those whose homes and neighbourhoods are being changed around them.

Musically, the track has a warm, understated arrangement featuring delicate guitar, bass, piano and restrained percussion. Paul Heaton handles the verses, while drummer Dave Hemingway provides the distinctive vocals during the choruses, creating an unusual contrast between the two voices.

There is something deceptively simple about “Build”. Beneath its catchy melody and gentle delivery lies a thoughtful observation about progress, redevelopment and the human cost of change. It also hinted at the more melodic and emotionally sophisticated songwriting that Paul Heaton would explore with The Beautiful South. “Build” remains one of The Housemartins’ most memorable recordings, combining beautiful pop songwriting with a quietly powerful social message.
