Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984, “Life On Your Own” was the lead single from The Human League’s fifth studio album, Hysteria. Following the enormous success of Dare and its string of hit singles, the band faced the challenge of maintaining their momentum while developing their sound. “Life On Your Own” continued their signature blend of polished synth-pop, combining shimmering electronic textures with memorable melodies and thoughtful songwriting.

Written by Philip Oakey, Jo Callis and Ian Burden, the song explores themes of loneliness, independence and the emotional consequences of a relationship ending. Oakey’s distinctive lead vocal is complemented by the harmonies of Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall, while layers of synthesisers and crisp electronic rhythms create a sophisticated, atmospheric backdrop. Although more reflective than some of the band’s earlier work, the song retains the melodic hooks and polished production that had become their trademark.

While Hysteria did not quite replicate the phenomenal commercial impact of its predecessor, “Life On Your Own” demonstrated that The Human League remained one of Britain’s leading electronic pop bands. The single showcased the group’s ability to balance emotional depth with accessible songwriting, a quality that continued throughout their career. Today, it is appreciated as one of the band’s overlooked gems, admired for its elegant production, heartfelt lyrics and the unmistakable sound that helped define British synth-pop during the 1980s.

The song peaked at No. 16 in the UK charts on 7th July 1984.

LYRICS

Winter is approaching
There’s snow upon the ground
It’s good of you to visit me
I’m glad you came around
I don’t know how you found me
I didn’t let you know
I only moved to this address
I guess you think I ran out
But that’s not true
Other people settle down
I never do
I always have to move on
Just have to go
I’ve often wondered why that is
I’d like to say but I just don’t know

I guess you always wanted
Life on your own
I guess you always wanted
Life on your own

Up here the summer’s shorter
And winter’s very cold
I’m looking forward to the peace
My lonely life will hold
I’m really glad you came here
Thank you for the talk
It’s funny how my problem stopped
When we went for a walk
Standing here together
Means so much
I won’t forget your confidence
I won’t forget your touch
You know I’ll come to see you
Passing through
We’ll always be a world apart
I’ll travel on but I will be true

I guess you always wanted
Life on your own
I guess you always wanted
Life on your own
I guess you always wanted
Life on your own
I guess you always wanted
Life on your own
