Story Behind The Song

“Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless)” is one of the most recognisable television and film themes of the 1970s, combining a gentle, melancholic melody with lyrics that explore the absurdity and emotional cost of war. Originally written for Robert Altman’s 1970 film *M*A*S*H*, the song later became the familiar opening theme of the television series of the same name.

The lyrics were written by Mike Altman, the director’s teenage son, while the music was composed by Johnny Mandel. The unusual title and darkly ironic words reflect the film’s mixture of black comedy and serious commentary on military life. Rather than presenting war through conventional patriotic imagery, the song captures the loneliness, uncertainty and emotional exhaustion experienced by those caught up in conflict.

The recording most familiar to television audiences features vocals by the session group Mash, with an understated arrangement built around acoustic guitar, gentle percussion and a memorable whistled melody. Its restrained delivery gives the song a haunting quality, allowing the lyrics to contrast with the more playful moments of the programme.

Although the television series became famous for its humour and eccentric characters, the theme provided a reminder of the darker realities behind the comedy. Its combination of sadness and irony perfectly reflected the show’s distinctive approach to storytelling.

“Theme From M*A*S*H” remains a memorable piece of screen music, instantly recognisable for its melody and distinctive whistling. Beneath its deceptively gentle sound lies a thoughtful and unsettling reflection on the human consequences of war.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 31st May 1980.

SONG LYRICS

Through early morning fog, I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realised that I can see

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I’ll someday lay
So, this is all I have to say

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
“Is it to be or not to be?”
And I replied: “Oh, why ask me?”

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I…

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And you can do the same thing if you please
